Continued from my last post...
OMG,I almost forgot the Inter-House rivalry.I used to be such a patriotic ( a trait I rarely exhibit) Tagore-an always rooting for my house in sports as well as other events.Since I am just a commenting-from-couch sports person, I regularly represented my house in Quiz,Essay-Writing and Oratorical.Quizzing WAS my forte.I am quite out of touch with it after moving into college.
I guess I did write pretty decently but my works tended to be more on a serious note. And in Oratorical how ever much anyone did their best nobody could beat my classmate Shruthilaya. Her speeches used to be such power-packed energy boosters.
The crux of the inter-house rivalry was the Group Singing and Group Dance.Practice sessions on these excuses were most welcome by students and teachers.Group dance always meant some team getting eliminated for breaking rules with their songs and costumes.Seniors(the tall lanky 12th std batch) used to walk around intimidating the juniors and putting on an ego show.Group singing was solely Indira House's property.During the course of my five years in Main School I don't remember them ever losing it.
Adding to this competitions were the class assemblies, one for every term.Being an enthusiast in volunteerism ( As my friend Qube calls me All-in-All ) I used to show up quite often on the quadrangle for news-updates.My enthusiasm used to carry over to my speech that was laden with superlatives and news tidbits from BBC to Sun.The phrase that I remember so well is "Now for a look at the sky" as a prologue to the weather news.I used to have a reputation for long ( of course enlightening) speeches.
If not present among the presentation part of the assembly I used to be in the defaulters area.Forever I used to be pulled out for missing ribbons,dirty-brownish-white shoes.Divya Ma'am,my French guru supposed I was one among the prefects after catching me there every day.
This somewhere-between-good-and-bad behavior of mine started from ninth standard.I was elected as my class leader by some good-natured souls who thought it a solution from having a goody-goody watch over them.True to their hopes,I left the class on their own but somehow we did not get into much trouble.(Minus than Leena Ma'am slapping Shriram incident)
At the end of ninth we wasted one whole month on the pretext of History exhibition where thanks to my team-mates(Murali,Mani,Jayanth,Vicky and Ajay) we managed to do some sort of Stonehenge replica.Though it was not quite great it was enough for us to escape Shanthalakshmi's wrath.
It was during this time we went as a school excursion to Mahabalipuram, a trip none of us can still forget.Sometime soon I will post snaps of that time when I was such a spoilt-irritating tomboy (I guess I still am).We also organised a thanks-giving session for our teachers on Sept 5th and tried honouring them with mementos and speeches.
By large, ninth standard was such a beautiful and exciting year for the whole class. Then presto we moved on to the all-important tenth standard.A dinghy classroom with such complicated seating facing the road. After numerous complaints from our lot Lakshmi Ma'am decided to do something and made us all co-operate and adjust.Under the pretext of free-hour my trio of friends used to run off to library and gaze on torn and mis-used(wonder who was responsible for the same) Sportstar. After every visit of ours library would be missing quite a few books thanks to our super-thieving abilities.
Due mention must be made of Balaguru our Art-Deivam!! His butler English and love for art made him the comical inspiration for MB and Rajesh.Even Combu with her enlightening Chemistry equations would invoke peals of laughter.Jusssst and her Geography,Shanthu and her hisssstory,UPK and economics and above all Chitti and Civics made the last year at JV inexplicable fun.
Aarthi,Janani and me will never forget the thagara-dappa canteen, racing back home,lunches-on-the-road,ridiculous,Swaraj Dweep...Small small incidents that make such memories worth reminiscing.
I miss those days when all of us were so innocent more likely unassuming and enjoyed days doing nothing but having fun and trying to grow up.
